Program Director: BSc Digital Media, University of the West of England, Bristol (2015–2017)
In November 2016 I was appointed Programme Director (course leader) of the BSc Digital Media at UWE. The course focused on the critical and practical application of digital media to real-world social and industry contexts, with an emphasis on creative technology and entrepreneurship.
At the point of appointment the programme was on special measures and at risk of closure. I led a participatory review of the curriculum and programme structure in collaboration with Dr Dave Meckin, working closely with students, teaching staff, administrators and international partners. The programme operated across a complex institutional landscape, including agreements with the Hong Kong Design Institute .
Through this consultative process we identified three core issues: a lack of programme identity, inconsistency in teaching across units, and weak internal and external visibility. In response, we designed and secured approval for four new 30-credit modules, expanded live briefs and public student showcases, and strengthened international exchange and field-trip opportunities, including Hong Kong, Copenhagen (ITU) and Berlin (Transmediale festival).
In 2017 I presented a strategic case for investment to a university executive panel, successfully securing continuation of the programme, an increased student intake (from 25 to 40), funding for an optional industry placement year, a new senior lecturer post, and investment in facilities and equipment. Applications increased by 61% year-on-year, alongside a significant rise in final-year student satisfaction.
