Speaker is an interactive installation that explores digital processes as sculptural form, performance, and embodied sound. The work draws on my experience within UK soundsystem culture and my practice as a performer and creative technologist, using low-frequency sound as both material and interface.
The installation was presented as part of my MA Fine Art final exhibition at Birmingham School of Art and was awarded second prize in the IKON Gallery Masters Show of the Year. The piece was designed to be experienced physically as well as visually, emphasising sound as a spatial and bodily phenomenon rather than a purely auditory one.
The work features a figure dressed as a speaker, shown on screen beatboxing. As viewers move towards the projection, a sonic range sensor activates a high-powered sound system. The performer’s voice is transformed into a deep bassline that fills the space, transmitted through a 10k speaker rig and inducers embedded in the walls and floor, creating vibration that can be felt throughout the body.
Materials and technologies: installation, cardboard, 10k sound system, sonic range sensor, A/V and DMX-controlled lighting.
